School Achievement Outcomes

Education is another factor that is major in child development and the effects of poverty. Poverty limits school achievement for some children but the cognitive ability is a bigger factor. Studies show that a 10% increase in family income show a .2% increase in the number of school years completed. The relationship between income and completion of school had shocking factors such as family structure, parent’s education, and neighborhood characteristics. Other results even say if poverty was eliminated, schooling (number of years) would increase in children.

What does poverty mean for children?? cont..

Physical health is the number one problem in poor children in the United States. Compared to non poor children, physical health is the number one indicator of health outcome. Physical health problems range from low birth weight and infant mortality, lead poisoning, and growth stunting. Low birth weight increases the chances physical and emotional problems that may stricken them into adolescence and adulthood. Low birth weight is a major key factor for infant mortality and is also a major indicator of children's well being.

WHAT TO DO??

There is much evidence that family income (whether living in poverty or not) influences children's well being. Family income seems to be more related to children's ability and achievement rather than emotional behaviors. Timing of poverty is also an important factor with factor; meaning when or what age are children exposed to poverty. We would think that government programs such as welfare would hinder the escalating problem of poverty, but this only causes more problems. Children will begin to depend on the government for support and will not try to succeed in anything (may that be education or career). Their are many things we could do, but what steps could we actually take??
